I appreciate this a little bit off topic but I hope that someone in this group can point me in the right direction. I'm trying to write a paper and need a reputable reference to the Web load generated by a user. I had assumed this was a well researched topic. The sort of thing any ISP must know to predict future loading etc. Maybe that's the problem. Is this info the commercial equivalent of gold dust? Almost every web site will boast about its number of visitors but I can find no details on the inverse data - like how any sites does a single user visit in unit time, how much traffic this generates etc. Please, where should I be looking? -- Dr. Peter Hayward, Cambridge, UK.

I think you are assuming a higher standard of engineering than is the case. When I was working on comms controllers we were expected to produce detailed performance estimates, but in application development the concern is providing functionality and getting the development done quickly. The general approach seems to be select the hardware, server, write the application, and hope everyone made the right choices. Its probably cheaper to buy faster hardware than the cost of development or time to market. > Almost every web site will boast about its number of visitors but I > can find no details on the inverse data - like how any sites does a > single user visit in unit time, how much traffic this generates etc. > > Please, where should I be looking? Maybe Microsoft or Netscape have benchmarks for their servers. I think O'Reilly may have produced some comparative figures. I have seen at least one site display the time it took to do a search, the Delphi Super Page is one. Good luck, and if you find any info, let us know!
