It is often stated that the country codes {fr, gb, de, ...} used in
nTLDs are defined in an ISO standard somewhere. Any got any good
pointers on where to find a list of these?
(Obviously I've tried a web search, finding thousands of not quite
helpful hits on the obvious search terms.)

ISO-3166.

Altavista has 712 index entries for ISO*3166; here's one of the first:

ftp://ftp.ripe.net/iso3166-countrycodes - ISO 3166 Country Codes
- 2-letter and 3-letter codes, updated by the RIPE Network Coordination
Centre, in coordination with the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency at DIN Berlin.

Found using Yahoo (ISO and standard) as search.

After much consideration Brian {Hamilton Kelly} decided to share these

My thanks to all for the replies. I obviously have somethings to learn
in framing my queries on AltaVista, ("iso country code" and similar
throw up thousands of mentions but not definitions).
Best regards.

I find Alta Vista's simple interface is useless, because its simplistic
weighting mechanism generates so many irrelevant matches. Use the
advanced one, which allows one to filter articles using the top box,
including booleans, "A near B" and exclusions, and then to apply
weighting keywords using the lower box to being the most-relevant
articles up first. Sadly the master ISO3166 on ftp.ripe.net isn't
indexed, for some reason, but with filtering and weighting most of the
links are relevant.
F/U to poster, this isn't really relevant here (I'd take it to
d.i.discoveries if I thought it was still a useful group).
