OK I hope that these make sense,
but these are the results of the great KA9Q survey,
A total of 18 people resonded to the survey, so how representative it
is I couldn't say, but for what it's worth here ar the results.
I've left the sections the same as previously but tried to organize
the results within those section to show the most used/asked for first,
going down to the least used/asked for. The result are shown simply as
number U number W
for the number of people using an option and the number of people that
want the option. I've triued to sumamrise the commetns made at the bottom,
but probably not very well.
The full responses /* minus any thing that would identify the respondants */
can be found at ftp://bob.lostsoul.org/pub/demon/survey.txt

COMMENT SUMMARY
===============
Open source, preferabbly with suppotr for free compilers
Please make it compilable by BC 3.1, 3.0, DJGPP, water-cooled mainframes, ..
intergration of DOS and OS/2 code
- then simple cookbook instructions for novices to do custom compiles.
LFN support
Command-line invocation of ftp/http scripts (unattended FTP)
Wildcard mailkill
VT102 emulation
authinfo user/pass suppotr for nntp
"GROUP aaa" "ARTICLE nnn" support for news
Manual reset of backoff for news
Simultaneous news downloads from different servers: W
Alternative news client using article-numbers: W
get file entries should override any history file entry.
(I know external programs handle this OK now)
more flexible REWRITE file (or another non-relay feature)
Ensure that the new version is fully supported by Demon (where
'support' means that
everyone on the phone lines either knows the answers or
transfers the callers to someone who does
new official versions with full bugfixes are released
promptly
income tax is reduced to 10%
NAT support
logging of connect speed, protocol and terminal/line ID.
(and not logging of password)
optional logging of modem status/info AT &v1 for instance.
smtp list should not crash when run in OS/2 DOS box.
EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)
Some easy way of integrating support for common encryption methods such
as PGP, PKCS, etc. (required for EDI as per RFC1767 and various EDIINT
Working Group drafts).
FTP script logging to a separate file.
An ntalk client support
Thinking about what's happening at the moment, and the success others
are having with 'tcp kick <block>' and the success I'm having fixing
problems with post.demon.co.uk using 'tcp reset <block>' plus 'sm k',
What I'd Like Is: 'so kick <socket>' and 'so reset <socket>', to do
exactly the same without having to type an 8-char hex address.

I presume this little lot is far to long to contemplate doing it all.

Now *that* really would be brilliant!
And not too difficult to do ?
BTW Any chance of income tax down to 10%
and support for water cooled big iron ? ;-)

Sorry, I missed it; my killfile kills everything >= 200 lines. So does mine (and, I suspect, that of many others). So why not go back
and GET the article: you already have the Message-ID:
(<888821295snx@ka9q.demon.co.uk>) because it's in the references line of
YOUR posting? (And this one too, for that matter.)
If you don't already have MAKE_GET, you can still do things manually:
edit the ~\spool\news\history file to remove that ID, and insert it into
~\spool\news\get. Remember, it's not going to expire at Demon Towers for
another 3-1/2 weeks.

I would guess that most of us have some sort of Lines: kill
rule (mine is 400 or more), but might I offer:
!Newsgroups: demon.ip.developers*
as a possible addition to your kill file? OK, this might let
the odd piece of crud through but will at least ensure you get
anything posted to d.i.d as first ng choice. The volume is
pretty low, most postings are on topic/relevant, seems to me
the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
If you're really feeling brave you might even try
!Newsgroups: demon.ip.support.pc*
as well.

demon.ip.support.pc is for discussion of IP-related issues using plain
DOS software - *not* PC hardware, Windows, Netscape, Turnpike, MSIE...
