Would someone please give me some pointers as to how to find out

Is there any docuementation/site that documents this??

Basically you can't.

eg even if you happened to know that the 158.152.*.* netblocks
were only used by Demon, and Demon's main servers are based in
London, that does not tell you that I'm in London, or even in
the UK.

You can't. I've used my IP address, 158.152.8.140 from a laptop in a
hotel room dialling into Demon's nationwide number, there's no way for
anyone to tell that's what I was doing. All you can tell is which
organisation (often an ISP) administers that block of addresses, but
that doesn't tell you anything about where the nodes are physically. It
will tell you (by reverse DNS lookup) that it's keris.demon.co.uk, but
that's all.

With dynamic IP it's even worse, knowing the IP address doesn't even
tell you which node (as in name) is using it, because they are allocated
only as users dial in.

It's a good thing too - do you really want the owners of a web site to
know exactly where you live? Why do you want to know where an IP
address is? If you have a legitimate complaint (the only reason I can
see for validly needing to get in contact by some means other than
email) you can contact the ISP or parent organisation.
