Is Snews's Newsgroups: line broken?
#442

I find that when following a crossposted article with a line:

Newsgroups: ng1,ng2,ng3

that Snews usually (but not always??) will create an article with:

Newsgroups: ng1,
 ng2,
 ng3

I believe that this is broken as RFC821 (??or something) only allows
splitting a header line at permitted white spaces, and the
Newsgroups: line has no permitted white spaces except for the one
that is required after the ":".

Luckily the Demon mail2news gateway appears to be lax about this
requirement. However other gateways are stricter and they will first
reconstruct the mail item's line to become:

Newsgroups: ng1, ng2, ng3

And then the news server will reject the article for bad format.

The thing I can't put my finger on is why, sometimes, the following
article is formatted "correctly". Today I played for a while and I
couldn't make any unbroken followups, but I'm sure I've made some in
the past and I see some that were posted by other using Snews.

Regards,

You may be right about the RFC - I don't have it to hand - but
I've never known a whitespace after the comma to be a problem.

Indeed it's the way I usually write such lists. I guess I should
check and make sure.

Hmm. Odd.

I'm pretty sure that doing it on a single line and then posting with
NNTP will give a problem.

One present puzzle is that your followup that I'm quoting has no line
break. But when I try composing a reply to either my post or your I
get the broken header line. Yet apparently we're using the same
software. This is weird. Could it be editor sensitive? I'm using
TED.

He is - except in so far as it is 1036 (and 822 underpinning it).

Whitespace is unacceptable in "Newsgroups:"

your articles will not get far like that - many news systems will reject
them as non-conformant :(

I remember this issue coming up before, but a long time ago and I cannot
recall the Snews fix, sorry.
