I wonder if it would be possible for you to close and exit nos 
immediately after the headers have arrived, edit all the headers from 
your new nos log into a batch.txt file (not including the ones whose 
articles you want to read), unbatch your news and then log on again. 
Nos would percieve all the headers of the articles you don't want as 
duplicates and proceed to download the others.

I suspect you need to ask Dave, Frank or Phil if this idea could work 
(I don't know the nuts and bolts of nos well enough).
