Using the Apple Internal Modem 56k script, the init string seems to do nothing much other than confirm default settings. Fine if you are using sending Faxes as well, which I'm not. I've extended the experience base a little. I compared the connect rates of the Internal modem and a Courier, to the same numbers, using the same phone plug (with a splitter). It goes like this: Network Access Server Courier Internal modem Demon Red (Ascend) 50666 or 52000 49333 Demon Green (3Comm) 54666 33600*** Freeserve (Cisco) 50666 48000 ***What the hell is this? Apart from being V34 and bloody slow? The other rates are V90, so it's not that the internal is connecting with K56Flex (which the 3Comms don't support) or anything like that. Somebody reported they were getting good connects to Green; so am I, with the Courier... Steve? Jonathan? Which modem script are you using? The only difference is that the Courier is being driven via FreePPP while the internal uses Remote Access; this should make no difference, as all I'm measuring are reported connect rates before the internet protocols are applied. So; has any Apple modem maven got any bright ideas? Beyond the bleeding obvious as in "You get what you pay for" and "Don't get rid of the Courier"? By the way, I can confirm that Green "prefers" scripted logons; in fact direct logons from the Courier to Green *always* fail first time, or after a restart, but work okay second time. Odd behaviour. From the iBook, first time logons are reliable; they're just pointlessly slow. There may be a connection... Anyway, as I shall never use Green from the iBook (having Red and Purple to play with) this is academic. But I am curious. -- Peter
