First, via both Red and Purple, I don't experience the bad Fridays you complain of. Every now and again (maybe twice a week) I get a bad modem connection, at 33600, but DNS failures none at all. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I call in on average five times a day, mornings and evenings. Sometimes (but rarely) it takes maybe 20 secs to get connected to News, although Post seems to be up sooner than that; receiving mail by SMTP, 90% of the time mail flow starts 10 seconds after connection, 20 secs at the absolute latest. Browsing seems to be very reliable. Connection speeds are okay; I normally get 52k via Red and Purple. This using a Mac, with OT/FreePPP, Courier V Everything from 020 8255 xxxx (Telewest). Today (Friday) using an iBook and the internal modem, which is not as good as the Courier, I connected twice from Switzerland via the 0121 number, once at about 0600 BST and again at about 1530. Both connects were at 42k (not too bad on what's a fairly old line at this end, out in the country, although I sometimes see 45k). I got news and mail fine, both times. In the morning I noticed one roughly 5 second pause in the news flow, but that was all. Which number are you calling? You did see in demon.announce that there are heavy changes taking place on the Red ROMP (0845 0798666) and they were predicting problems connecting on that number till 0600? These jobs often take longer than expected. You could always try an alternative access number, such as Purple or Green. -- Peter
