I can only speak from personal experience, on a beige G3/266 running sys
8.1 and an iBook running sys 9.0.4

I run both IE5 and Netscape Navigator 4.08 and need both because:

IE5 is nice and quick, and displays HTML pages superbly- better than NN.

It works pretty well with Apple's MRJ 2.2, although it (MRJ) needs loads of
memory to run. NN's Java is much slower but runs in very little memory and
seems much more reliable than the IE5/MRJ combination. However it has an
older, more limited implementation of Java. There is a later implementation
of MRJ available from the Apple web site and apparently it works better
than 2.2. However that isn't the main issue.

The real snag is that IE5's Javascript is quite badly broken, although not
nearly as badly as IE4.5's, which was a disaster area, and it has trouble
with many sites as a result. NN, although older, is immensely better at
handling Javascript and will handle many commercial sites that fail with
IE5.

However, IE5 is superior because of its ability to save site images outside
the cache, and the Download Manager is, in my opinion, well worth having.
Which is why I use both IE5 and NN.

Crashes yes, although most of the time if it crashes you can quit it with a
Alt-Cmd-Esc and it will go gracefully. However I wouldn't like to try that
too often on system versions before 8.1. Again, NN seems to crash less
often. Some crashes are associated with using RealPlayer 7, which compared
to previous versions is a bit of a memory hog, so it's hard to generalise.

As for memory leaks, I've not seen any evidence of them. I can browse
dozens of sites over an hour, and never get any problems except Javascript
ones... And those are soft failures- you get an alert, and carry on.

These are only my personal opinions, limited to the two machines I use. If
you want a wider sample, ask again in uk.comp.sys.mac- I won't cross post
there, in case you want to limit your traffic, but if you're interested,
give it a try.
