I recently bought a Nexland hard ware router on Ebay. This works very well, except that I cannot now use a couple protocols. One is trace and the other is FTP up loading. Packets seem to go out OK but the incoming ones are lost. I presume this has something to do with the IP address translations in the router. How do I go about fixing this? is there a setting in TCP/IP which will allow the remote machine to see mine? -- You did something because it had always been done, and the explanation was "but we've always done it this way." A million dead people can't have been wrong, can they? Bill Bedford

I don't know how FTP uploading works, but using NAT will definitely
stop traceroute from working. The only way to make it work
correctly is not to use NAT (Network Address Translation). Demon
assigns the same IP address to your connection every time so you
may be able to put the appropriate address in the appropriate
place, choosing another address for the router.
Users of Apple's AirPort Base Station have the same problem.
Simon.
