W2000 Network Path on stand-alone PC

I keep our Turnpike data on \\Server\data and have the various paths set
to point there.

In the past, when the office closed, I would copy all the Server data
onto a W98 laptop drive d: which had a share name of Data, and change
the laptop's network name to Server.

This allowed all to continue on the laptop without any changes being
necessary as the \\server\data path was still valid.

We have changed to W2000 and have discovered that as soon as you remove
the network cable from the laptop, you can no longer use network paths.

Does anyone have any suggestions to allow reference to network paths
(when referring to the local machine of course)

Many thanks.
