I have recently installed Windows 2000 Pro with Service Pack 1 on my
computer, but whenever I try to connect to Demon using Turnpike
(versions 5.01 and 6 beta 1) I am unable to get DNS. I can ping remote
machines using dotted quad addresses, so routing is working OK, but
translating host addresses fails.
The connection property details are as follows:
General
Connect using Modem - Courier V. Everything V90 etc.
Use Dialling Rules
Options
Dialling options
All unchecked except 'Prompt for phone number'
Security
'Typical' is checked
Allow unsecured password
Networking
Dial-up server: PPP; Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet
Settings
Enable LCP extensions - checked
Enable software compression - unchecked
Negotiate multilink for single link connections
Components used:
TCP/IP
Client for Microsoft Networks
Ipconfig /all shows:
PPP adapter Demon:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
Description : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
Physical Address : 00-53-45-00-00-00
DHCP Enabled : No
IP Address : 158.152.162.80
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway : 158.152.162.80
DNS Servers : 158.152.1.43
: 158.152.1.58
I have received a lot of help from the folk in demon.ip.support.turnpike
but it mainly boils down to 'it works for them, but not for me'. I have
been re-directed here, and would be grateful for any help.

It should be 255.255.0.0. Having said that, if your subnet mask really was 255.255.255.255 it would cause you more severe problems. -- Jim Smith

I don't know if this will help, but a. normally I connect using the standard Win2k dialup (over g5, FWIW) b. over the years I have tried setting up my IP and DNS addresses manually, and tried leaving it to Win2k/Demon to sort them out. Both approaches usually work, but occasionally I've found I've had to switch to the other approach temporarily to overcome some problem whose origin I've never been able to determine. c. I just looked at my IPConfig and it also says 255.255.255.255 for the subnet mask. But things seem to be working fine on this connection - for now. d. I've had very similar problems recently (i.e. pinging the DNS servers works but I often can't get through to web sites unless I muck around with my config and redial, and it's frequently difficult to get through to the g5 numbers in the first place). Normally I put those down to more general problems at the BT/Demon end, but I often wonder whether there is something in the standard way things are set up on Windows that interacts badly with the way Demon configure their various systems. Maybe the fact that something thinks the subnet mask is 255.255.255.255 is one of those "somethings". I've just been looking at the new Helpdesk pages on the demon site and notice that there is a slight difference between the suggested configuration for ISDN (don't specify DNS addresses, or indeed, any addresses) and non-ISDN (do specify DNS addresses). What is the likely reason for that? Peter Jamieson

I actually sorted the problem out the old fashioned way - reformat disk and do fresh install of Win2K. Must have been a corrupt file, I guess. I think I'll leave things as they are, even if the subnet mask is wrong. -- Bob Williams
