I've set up a caching DNS on a Linux server which serves my LAN using
Demon's servers as forwarders - it works fine. However, I can't seem to do
the same with NT Server. I can get name resolution of the local machines
but not for external names. I've quoted the forwarders in DNS manager but
get these results even when working on the server:
On DNS server whilst connected to Internet and Demon's DNS servers as
forwarders:
****************************************************************************
*
E:\>nslookup www.demon.net
Server: menelaus.localdomain
Address: 10.100.100.1
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** menelaus.localdomain can't find www.demon.net: Non-existent domain
E:\>ping www.demon.net
Pinging www.demon.net [194.159.254.213] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 194.159.254.213: bytes=32 time=150ms TTL=252

Am I missing something or is it a limitation of NT and RAS?

It looks like your NT DNS has no notion of which zones its primary (or secondary) for. Its assuming the domain it lives in is still 'localdomain'. HTH J0e
