I have been using the new Ipswich PoP for a couple of weeks now and have
a number of problems with the modems there, these problems are *much*
more noticeable than if I dial one of Demon's London numbers so I think
they are something to do with differences at Ipswich (or at least with
the new PoPs and servers).
I get quite a lot of failed connects for various reasons:-
1 - Nothing happens after the connect message, this is usually when
the V42 messages have been slower to appear than normal, i.e. I can
nearly always predict when it's going to do nothing after the
CONNECT.
2 - Modems fail to negotiate V42, the connection still goes ahead
but obviously is more prone to errors.
3 - Modems warble to each other until the wait for CONNECT times out.
4 - Modem won't hang up. This is definitely the *worst* problem, if
I get *any* [COMW] warnings then my link is dead and I can't hangup
my modem to re-dial. I have to power down my system to unhang the
modem, dropping DTR or whatever does nothing.
It *feels* like the above problems occur on certain modems (lines on the
hunt group?) as they very rarely occur twice in a row. My modem is a
Dynatech (i.e.cheapo) V34 internal. As I say it has no problems with
the London numbers, or CIX or another local ISP's modems, just with the
Demon PoP at Ipswich.
Finally I only ever seem to connect successfully to very few different
servers, is this right? I think I have see 11, 14 and 15 plus possibly
16 in the du-finch-xx.access.demon.net message.
