With Home Highway now (supposedly) available the time has come to look seriously at ISDN for Demon access. Has anyone tried it from O/S 2, if so with which TA did you use and how much hassle was there?

Me too, but I already have 2 POTS lines from different suppliers...

I am trying to set up a small network at home. 3 computers variously
running Win95, Win NT4W, Win NT5S EE beta, OS/2 v4, Linux (RH 5.1 and
Suse 5.2). Which of these is the Teles compatible with? The Teles www
site is still under construction.
The alternative to avoid OS compatibility problems that I was
considering was a combined standalone router and hub, but 400?

Masquerading for lans could be handy for me.

An offer I couldn't refuse... Thanks

I wasn't aware that compression was available under ISDN at all! Does
Demon do it? Do all TAs do it, or just some of them? What kind of
compression is it? Apart from the time it takes to connect, is there
much advantage to ISDN over a 56k modem? Is there a speed limit
somewhere at Demon or the home end which will even things out anyway,
like the serial port running at 115200bps?

Questions, questions. I don't expect you to answer all of them, but your
thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

-- Thanks for your usual helpfulness Richard. If I can find one I may well try it. For others reading this, note that the 44kbps claimed as likely on V90 modems is almost certainly a pipe dream if you have 2 lines. BT seem to be fitting a device called a DAX in such situations and this limits the line sped to 28.8 !! I read about this in the September Internet magazine and then realised why I could not get better than 28.8 myself even with a K56 modem to the Demon Energis number and Ray Gwinn's SIO fitted.

I've just this minute been looking at the BT highway web pages (http://www.homehighway.bt.com/) I must admit, I'm a little tempted!! I suppose if you ignore the startup charge, and consider the 40ukp inc 15ukp free calls, it's really only about 15ukp more than a normal monthly account! I would assume that using a TA + In-joy would be relatively straightforward? Cheers Chris -- /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ Chris H. Thanks Richard. I called BT HomeHighway and they have ten times the demand they were expecting, and my exchange cannot handle it yet. The person I spoke to knew nothing about BusinessHighway (using the same technology as HH) or standard ISDN, so comparisons were not possible. Typical. There's probably a HOWTO somewhere. I'll have a look. http://tsikora.tiac.net/i4l-faq/eng-i4l-faq.html There seems to have been a glitch around kernel v2.0.30, otherwise it's built into the kernel. NT5 isn't working here yet. > Painfully expensive and inflexible better to get a 386 for UKP25 and > run Linux as a router. After my recent mega-upgrade session I seem to have lots of 486/mb/vlb/scsi bits left over, but no cases, or the room to have a 4th (or 5th) computer. Perhaps I should replace the WinModem in Pav with a Teles, though it will be running NT4 usually. > Demon do STAC, STAC-9 and MS-STAC you mail compression@demon.net and Mmm, no compression in OS/2 or Linux, and MS will charge a bunch for LAN interface stuff. I looked at the Zyxel site recently and seem to remember something about them doing MNP5 (?). > ISDN is better than any 56K modem any day ignoring expense I can get > 7.3Kbytes/sec on a zip file on a single channel. If that's without compression, that's good. Twice what I get (at 33.6kbs currently). > Running 64,000bps into a 115,200 port is OK but overuns could be a > problem. It depends on your processor, system load etc. So does the Teles card work as a serial port, (115k) or does it do better than that (like a NIC does)? I was thinking more about something I read a while ago which IIRC said that the Ascends are limited to 115kbs, so that even with a 56k modem and a highly compressable file you still only get 115kbs max. I could be wrong though, and I don't know anything about Demon's ISDN equipment limitations. Only one question this time... Cheers, Chris (@idol.d.c.u)

Thanks. That's given me something to think about once I've got all my
operating systems talking to each other over the network.
