Hello out there ! Anyone got the new ADSL express service working on anything linux yet? The alcatel USB modem is a bit odd. Just wondered...I have had no success yet and :-( - I feel so alone ! Please remove the "btinternet.com" to reply.

Sorry I can't respond to your question but I was intrigued as to how removing the btinternet.com part of your From: line would get a reply back to you? This is how your address appears if I select "Reply to Sender Only" in Netscape: Dan Warren <Dwarren.demon.co.uk@btinternet.com> Now I'm intelligent enough to realise that a reply will probably get to you if I use: dan@dwarren.demon.co.uk or postmaster@dwarren.demon.co.uk (if you comply with RFC 822) or perhaps anything in front of the @ would be sufficient. It is with my setup. I suspect you need to rethink your spam protection strategy :-) -- Richard Howlett mailto:richard@howie.org.uk

Yep, I'm using it. It serves two windows boxes and itself with fast always
on internet. The stabilty is very good (if the modem likes your machine)
i.e. I've only needed to restart the connection once this week! (and thats
was for some problems at demon's end), I get > 55K downloads so everything
working fine.
I got it working under windows first, downloaded the package off Alcatel
website, then downloaded the 3 ISO's of Mandrake 8.1. Burnt the CDs,
installed Linux (I removed my Redhat distro, Mandrake has support for the
modem out of the box) and then copied the speedmgnt.o file from Alcatel into
the correct directory (the Mandrake installer tells you where to put it).
Worked first time.
I suspect you wanted to know how to upgrade an existing Linux distro, but I
couldn't even compile the packages on RedHat 7.1 distro. Mandrake 8.1 is the
way to go for an easy life.
Bye,
Deano

You are absolutely right... :) my anti spam policy there was slightly convoluted, so convoluted that only a fellow Demon subscriber would realise that there is no "btinternet.com" in demon.co.uk It all stems from bitterness towards BTI I thought that I would jam up their mailserver with lost messages in return for the two years substandard service that I have just ended with them ! I was told that "home highway" would not work with linux, I was also told that I could be "struck off" for not using BTInternet's software to connect with. In the end I gave up talking to the prats. After all I am the customer, I am always right, and my linux box DOES now connect to ADSL. .. (hooray) Anyway. I'm ranting. I'll stop it right away :) > > Now I'm intelligent enough to realise that a reply will probably get to > you if I use: > dan@dwarren.demon.co.uk > or > postmaster@dwarren.demon.co.uk (if you comply with RFC 822) or > perhaps anything in front of the @ would be sufficient. Deano Thanks for the info, I was considering upgrading to mandrake soon anyways (its so easy to download distros on ADSL, it would be rude not to have the latest) I did manage to get it working, but the stuff on sourceforge was WAY to complicated. The kernel recompile was fine, but success with the drivers was eluding me. the SARILIB/SPEEDTOUCH route still had me baffled after 3 days ! :) I am reasonably linux-profficient, and I think that the fact that there were too many packages and patches to use. Linux should be getting easier - That is not a good example of how to write a simple driver for a hardware device ! In the end I gave up on that cause of action, and downloaded the alternative drivers (that don't need kernel recompile) by Benoit papillault. ( http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch/index.en.php3 ) These compiled perfectly on my Redhat 7.0 and I knocked up a couple of quick daemons to download the microcode and conect at boot time .... works fine and I am using it right now. The whole process took about an hour. Next question is: why is my connection speed 32% faster than DUN in windows 2000 on the same PC... Not that I'm complaining ;) Cheers Dan > Yep, I'm using it.
