Season's Greetings, fellow diehards!

I know you're still there, so thought I'd ask here rather than
d.service: what time server(s) do you use for ka9q/gremnos/yan
whatever?

What I've been seeing here (for a long time) is that the response
from "time auto on" is taking longer and longer, and sometimes
isn't happening at all.

I've tried ntp.dcu, ntp1.dcu, ntp2.dcu as adverised on Demon's
website (though "advertised" is perhaps not the right word given
the trouble I had finding the info!) and also gate.dcu (which I
found in a CNAME record in domain.txt).

All are as slow to respond as each other, if at all. Is there a
reliable public time server available? Or has NTP changed over
the years? -- I can believe that it is "my setup", which hasn't.

It's obviously not a huge problem, just a nuisance as news
doesn't start to flow [automatically] until the time service
completes.

Cheers,
Pete

I used ntp2a.mcc.ac.uk today and it worked.

The one above isnt exactly greased lightning.

I have an fkey set to "nntp kick". Would that help?

Best 4 the new year. Ian.

I use ntp1 and ntp as my time servers; and they worked fine using KA9Q
running in MSDOS 6.22. Before the changeover, the news would always start
flowing immediately.

Since the changeover, of course, my KA9Q set-up has not been able to access
news from Demon. I know the reason for this but have not been able to
discover whether KA9Q can be used to access the news or, if so, how the
set-up can be changed so that it can be used to down load news from Demon.
I have an account with Individual Net but cannot discover how or if KA9Q is
able to do an authentication of a third party news service.

I have read all the information that I can find on the matter, both
contained in the Demon package and from on-line sources. So far, I have not
come across any information on whether it is possible or if so what changes
to make to the set-up. Neither has a great deal of experimentation with
net.exe commands yielded any results other than error messages.

Any assistance on this you could offer would be much appreciated.

I have made several postings to this group and also demon.service through
someone else's set up; and none of them appear to have arrived.

Fingers crossed...

Seasons' Greetings,

Colin

How odd. Which ROMP do you use? Here it takes anywhere from a
minute upwards to get a time response; I originally thought that
it might be a DNS lookup problem, but plugging in a dotted quad
directly (not recommended) makes no difference. I too am running
plain DOS 6.22 -- no MS Windows on this box!

To the best of my knowledge, the Demon supplied KA9Q net.exe does
not have the capability to authenticate the news connection, nor
collect news by article number. I use GremNOS (a drop in replacement
for net.exe -- Simon will be here soon to provide a download link)
but I think that YAN too can handle this. NIN allows you to get
news via NEWNEWS, all you need to do is grab a GremNOS net.exe
and change the nntp command in autoexec.net from

nntp addserver news.demon.co.uk 600

to

nntp addserver news.individual.net 600 user yourNINname yourNINpassword

I believe too that the new Demon offering doesn't support
mail2news (which the Demon snews does by default) -- for this you
will need GremNOS or YAN (and manually fix your outgoing posts to
mail2news@dcu or download a JohnWash version of snews that can do
direct posting to news).

That sounds like it might be a mail2news problem. But rest
assured that with the right net.exe and snews.exe you can receive
and post to news via NIN. Please post again if you're still
having a problem or can't find the apps required -- someone will
help.

Yes, Yan will do this. I used to use NIN when it was free and it
needed authentication then.
Yan also works with some non-NEWNEWS news servers.
Yan stuff is here ..

Diehards do what it says on the tin ;-)

Noted, ta. Will give it a try later

So do I, though I tend to collect news at quiet times via an
automated (and usually unattended) session, so a fkey doesn't
help. I even added "$nodial nntp kick" to autoexec.net for a
period when the time server wasn't responding at all.

But since posting, I've looked through the GremNOS source and as
a result made some additions and re-orderings in autoexec, so
will see if that makes a difference.

Personally I'll be very grateful to be in the same job...

Looks like you did it all yourself :-) But good to hear that
you're back in business again.

Not with the connection -- as you have seen -- but if NIN doesn't
have a mail2news gateway, you will need a way to do direct
posting. Your snews 1.30 will put outgoing news into ~/mqueue
(~ is your demon home dir) as wrk/txt pairs; create a new dir
~/nqueue -- this is where GremNOS will look -- and move them
there. Oh, and delete the .wrk file, it's not needed. You might
also have to delete the "To: mail2news@..." line and alter the
"Path:" line -- I forget the details, but something like
replacing the "!colin" at the end with "!not-for-mail".

Alternatively, take a trip to www.johnwash.co.uk and grab a JW
version of Snews, which will do all this for you!

I've had a modicum of success here too; it would appear that over
the years my autoexec.net has suffered and some lines out of
order, leading to whatever was defined for the time server not
being resolved in a timely manner. I'm still tweaking but at
least the time check is now happening within a few seconds.

I suspect that longer term a small change to the nettime module
might be in order...

Cheers,
Pete
