Oddity with W98SE and Explorer

Can anyone explain this one please?

I run W98SE on my home machine with the view in Windows Explorer to show
all files and all extensions.

My Company laptop has exactly the same settings for view in Windows
Explorer, except that it seems to follow the 'hide extensions for known
file types' route. So a file with, say, a .bzt extension will show that
extension, bit a .exe or .doc will not. I have turned the functions on
and off several times but to no avail.

I have full power user access to the laptop, and even our IT people
cannot explain why this is happening.

Anyone any ideas?
