A real puzzle?

I have a problem which is really puzzling me. Can anyone help?

I have been using for at least a year a perfectly OK small network, a
Pentium 60Mhz, 32Mb, AMD 2100 compatible network card and NetBeui protocol
with at least 150Mb free disk space as a small file and print server running
Windows 95 (machine 1). This machine has an HP LaserJet 4 Plus directly
attached via LPT1.

The second machine (machine 2) is a 450 MHz PIII, 128Mb RAM, a DLINK DE528
network card and NetBeui, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP protocols, 5 GB free hard drive
space running Windows 98. The machines are connected via Cat 5 UTP via an HP
8 Port Hub.

I have used machine 2 to both access machine 1's hard drive and to print to
the LaserJet. I have used machine 1 to access machine 2's hard drive all
without problems. Until today that is!

Machine 1 can still access machine 2's hard drive. Machine 2 can still
access machines 1's hard drive but machine 2 cannot now print to the
laserJet on machine 1.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer driver on both machine one
and machine two using the latest driver from the HP site. I have ensured the
sharing on machine one is still enabled and I have checked that machine two
is routed through to the right machine and printer path. However whenever I
try to print from machine two, even just a driver self test I get the
following message

"There was an error writing to \\Secretary\hp for printer (HP LaserJet 4
Plus/4M Plus):
There was a problem printing to the printer due to an unknown system error.
Restart Windows, and then try printing again.
The printer will be set to work offline.
To save your print job in the local printer queue, click OK"

Needless to say I have rebooted both machines all to no effect.

I have tried everything I can think of, can anyone help please.

Regards

Richard

It is perhaps worth bearing in mind that demon.ip.support.win95 is a
newsgroup for helping people with Internet Protocol (ip) questions about
connecting to Demon Internet.

On the client machine, check the name of printer is correct. The
updated drivers may have changed the name and port of the printer on
the server machine. (The server is the one the printer is attached to)

It may be easiest to delete the printer from the client machine start
\ settings \ printers and then re-install it using the network browser
to find the correct port.

Thank you Denis for your help. In view of the welcome that I have received
from other posters I think in future, with your permission, I'll converse
with you directly via email. Again thanks for your civil reply.

Regards

Richard
