[Originally posted in demon.ip.support, when it really belonged in here, I think!] Pardon me if this one has been done to death in here, I'm finding it difficult to google the archives because of the problem below - I can't consistently resolve addresses: Fri, 7 Sep 2001 21:20:32 Failed to connect to POP3 server pop3.demon.co.uk: [translating host name to IP address] Connection failed - Host not found -- Winsock ERROR : DNS Authoritative: Host not found Happens on a regular basis. I'm not running a DNS server here on this WIN 98 SE box - it's a SDU to demon, using their DNS, with an @guard firewall. Often I'll get this message in my Turnpike logs within a few minutes of logging on, or I can fire off a 100 meg download, pop over to the pub and come back three hours later to find DNS still works perfectly. Any ideas? Can anyone recommend a caching DNS server for Win 98 which I can use in the meantime to determine where the problem is - my box or demon... -- Steve Flynn PGP fingerprint: 9159 B806 3F54 73AD 0055 7BB3 6993 EBA3 612D 4EB6 PGP key available from all good PGP servers world-wide.

Also check the demon dns servers are correct or server assigned in dun or networking configs etc. I have a problem on my machine that I can reproduce as follows: 1) Connect to company network. 2) Open ip applications. 3) Make dun connection. 4) Try to use any app opened at stage 2 to talk to a server. This is I think due to the ip stack resetting, but the applications don't get their ip settings reset unless they are closed and reopened. If this sounds in any way a familiar scenario, then this may be the problem, perhaps switching between two dun accounts with different isps and not closing down and reopening apps?
