Pathname problem when opening . DOC document from Windows Explorer

I have a file C:\My Documents\nps\novcat01.doc

If I fire up MS Word and then open the document, it opens OK.

If I double click novcat01.doc in Windows Explorer, MS Word opens and I
get a message:

"The document name or path is invalid.
Try one of more of the following:
* On the file menu click open to open the document.
* Make sure the file has a .DOC extension.
(C:MY.DOC)"

When I OK this I get:

"The document name or path is invalid.
Try one or more of the following
* Check the path name to make sure it was typed correctly.
* On the file menu click Open. Search for the file using this dialogue
box.
(DOCUMENTS\NPS\NOVCAT01.DOC)"

Why is Windows Explorer breaking the path at the space in "My
Documents"? Any fix for this?

Probably an error in the Windows file association for files with a "doc"
extension. Missing quotes are often the cause of a file path with a
space breaking. Here I have the Open command using DDE with quotes
around the FileOpen command, thus:

[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

Having said that, this is not really the best newsgroup in which to ask
questions of this sort: demon.ip.support.* means questions about
connecting to Demon Internet (in the case of this particular newsgroup,
connecting to Demon with Win95) rather than more general Windows
questions.

Something has upset the default asociations for the .doc file type and
forgotten to use quotes round the %1 parameter.

This is often caused by an installation that updates dde etc settings
afair.

Try editing the doc filetype in the windows explorer filetypes menu
and putting double quotes round the %1 in the command for open.

Or, re-install microsoft word / office.

The "something" is almost certainly me. ;-) Your mention of quotes
below I think is the clue I need. Until recently the association was
pointing to wordpad. I changed the association because I wanted the
documents to open in winword. Clearly I must have a mess of changing
the association.

I'll do that. Fingers crossed that it will work.

Later:

Yes, that's fixed it. I had just given the path to winword without the
"%1". Many thanks for giving me the vital clue.
