Having just got my new home 10baseT TCP/IP LAN going, I'm now learning how to use it. A couple of very basic questions about working in Win9x: 1. AIUI My Computer, Windows Explorer and Network Neighbourhood are all slightly different instances of the same thing. My Computer seems to just display information about the local PC - maybe not surprisingly! But is there any functional difference between WE and NN for accessing the network? Cosmetics aside, does one do anything network-related that the other doesn't? Or is the functionality of WE simply divided into MC and NN as a way of 'simplifying' (ie mystifying) the local and LAN aspects of the system? 2. I understand - I think - about how to set up shared resources eg files on diffferent networked PCs, but what about copying or moving files from one PC to another across the network. Does Cut/Paste or dragging in eg WE work the same as on the local PC or is there more to it across the network? Reason for asking is that leafing through an introductory book on networks, the topic of FTP is raised very early in talking about file transfer. I'm obviously familiar with FTP in the Internet context, but surely there are other ways of doing file transfer between PCs on a small LAN? Regards John Dann

Yes in that they are all based on Windows Explorer. >My Computer seems >to just display information about the local PC - maybe not >surprisingly! I would be surprised. At the top level here My Computer shows all the available drives, including networked ones. But this may vary according to the network software you use. >But is there any functional difference between WE and NN >for accessing the network? Well it can be a bit slower, but drag 'n' drop and copy and paste should work just fine for shared resources. -- Paul Terry
