Last Friday Demon managed to close down our web site completely, by
accident. Seems that when we were transferred from the old to the new
server, many moons ago, it wasn't quite done right, and a little time
bomb went off on Friday during the course of some administrative action
or other. Although Demon were notified on Saturday of the problem, it's
still not up and running even now. For some reason, they had to start
all over again and allocate new IP numbers to the site, with the
consequent delays associated with DNS propagation, compounded by the
fact that they initially forgot to point two of our three domain names
to the new web space.

Posting this because a. I feel the need to vent, b. demon.ip.www needs
the traffic ;-), and c. has this happened to anyone else?

Andrew.

Demon have lost our site twice. Both times our site just had an empty
directory listing but an ftp to uk-upload still showed all our files.

Called demon and found that the web-forwarding half of the account had
been disabled but they had no record of why/how it happened.

Oh dear, now I'm worried!
Demon are about to migrate our site from old to new servers!
So - "www.vasgbi.com" may disappear into the vapours.

Thanks for the warning.

Demon moved my site from the old to new servers some while ago, but they
still have the old FTP site open and the files are still there. I guess
10MB is not more, but is says little for the housekeeping.

Just to report that as of this evening, a little over a week after our
site was nuked, our three domain names are finally all up and working
and pointing at our web site. O frabjous day!

I think part of the problem is that when anything changes, they have to
wait for a new "build", whether DNS or web server configuration
changes, for the change to take effect. If they get it wrong, then
resolution has to wait until the next build; and if they get it wrong
several times, as in our instance, then days go by without resolution.
It would seem a very good idea to have a manual intervention procedure,
especially in extreme cases, so that changes can be checked out
immediately.

A while ago Demon managed to erase one of my sites just in the course of
upgrading from a Diva 10 to a Diva 20 product. It took almost two days
of solid hassle being passed from one department to another and back
again before they sorted it out and I was never offered an apology.
Since then I have been extremely cautious about letting them change
anything unless there is a dire need for it.

William
