Internet on the Amiga

I wonder if anyone can help me please.

I used to be an Amiga user but sadly changed to PC 3/4 years ago.
However my brother still uses his Amiga 1200 and from time to time I
sort out his problems after a short refresher course.

What he wants to do now is buy a modem, sign up with an ISP and use E-
Mail etc. The problem is that I can`t remember how I used to do it and
what software I used.

The questions therefore are:-

1.What is the best value modem he should buy for use with the Amiga?

2.Things having moved on no doubt what software should we get him and
where from?

3.What ISP should he sign up with? I suppose I am also interested in
this, being currently with Demon (using Turnpike - there is no Amiga
version is there) and Freeserve. What experience do people have with the
ISPs offering free access and free telephone alongside (i.e. for
internet use)?

4. Any other advice. Are there any net pages I should be visiting?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Derek.

I don't want to promote specific modem makes, as each have their merits.
I suggest you get a copy of AmigaActive magazine and have a read through the adverts.

Also visit http://www.vapor.com for the excellent NetConnect package 3 for the Amiga.

As for free internet access, I personally use 2 ISP.

http://www.screaming.net
They provide free evening (6pm-8am) access and all weekend, no monthly charge and no
phone call charge either (0845 access but they pay, you don't)

http://www.redhotant.com
Free 24/7 access. cost is one of 3 options: 10,20 or 30 a year fee plus a one-off 30
joining fee. no call charges are made at anytime of the day.

Hope this information helps you.

regards
magnet

Any external modem.

Miami or NetConnect3 (the latter is on CD, the former on Aminet).

As for email/news, that's very much personal choice (though some
comes with NC3).

Nope, but so what, it's just a news/mail client.

No difference between Amiga and PC. Just get a FS account for now.

Any external modem should work on the Amiga. (although it might take a
bit of fiddling with init strings and so on to get it working since on
the PCs this is usually done transparently by the software). So see PC
magazines etc. for reviews. I'm not convinced there's *that*
much to choose between them these days. Personally I have a Supra
DiamondExpress 56e PRO which works nicely although the manual is on CDROM
(in HTML format) and doesn't have all the info. It's not hard to get
working though, and the manual does even tell you how to change the
country code on a computer other than a PC (if you look hard).

AmiTCP Genesis or Miami are the two main TCP/IP stacks (which is
essential). Although if he gets OS3.5 I believe there's one with it.

Both of these have limited demo versions on the Internet but have to be
bought.

The best thing to do is buy a package like NetConnect 3 which contains
full registered versions of AmiTCP Genesis and a whole stack of other
Internet software (web browser, e-mail/news client, telnet client, IRC
client, ICQ client etc.)

>3.What ISP should he sign up with?

Again, *most* ISPs should work with the Amiga (fundamentally they're all
basically the same although there are "issues" with one or two). If they
don't directly support the Amiga then often it's easier to sign up with a
PC, get the connection info off there and transfer it to the Amiga.

Don't have that much experience, but Free4All support Amigas so they may
be a good choice for a free ISP (or the associated redhotant which is 0808
dialup)

Thanks Tim and others who replied.

I think I had better get my Amiga down from the loft and see how I used
to do it - but thanks for your help.
