The other day a house about 50m away had a direct lightning strike to it.
This caused an induced surge on the nearby telephone system and
unfortunately this hit my modem line.
As a result, the modem connected to the line got fried. The PC connected
to the modem died. My Amiga, connected to the PC via a null modem cable
seems to be OK *except* that the serial port appears to be dead - I've
tried it with a modem borrowed from a friend (which works) and I can't
persuade it to do anything at all so I'm fairly sure that it is dead.
I've had a look inside and there's no obvious visible damage (unlike in
the modem where capacitors literally exploded) so I'm guessing the serial
chip has gone. Presumably (since it's all SMD) there's not much I can
do?
Assuming there isn't, does anyone know by any chance of anywhere that
repairs Amigas around the Cardiff, UK area? Failing that I'll have to
send it off for repair to Analogic or someone similar.

You don't say what type of Amiga you are using but it doesn't really matter. All Amiga's use the same CIA chips (well maybe not the A4000T). There are two chips, an ODD CIA and an EVEN CIA and they should be marked on the motherboard silk screen. Try swapping them and if your mouse stops working but the modem starts working it is a blown CIA chip. >> Presumably (since it's all SMD) there's not much I can do? WRONG!!! - But it takes a fair amount of special tools!!! Which type is your Amiga? Any specialised radio repair shop should be able to change the chip, and get hold of a new one, EG via RS Components or Radioparts or Farnell or something like that... I changed my A4K Chip 3 (Three!!!) times, an has now installed a socket! Don't mess around in building little PAR controllable units unless ya know how... ) And i'm just a standard Radio Mechanic and 'Ole Amiga Freak snc 86' Good Luck...

I don't have a printer so I haven't tried the parallel port yet. I can
borrow
one to try it with though, if that's relevant. Haven't tried the gameport
either
since I don't have a joystick but I can swap the mouse into it and switch
the port
easily enough.
The floppy controller is definitely OK, as is everything else AFAICS,
including the
IDE controller.

Oops. It's an A1200. Motherboard rev 1D IIRC.

I've heard about swapping them before but everything inside is surface
mounted; I
can't really swap them very easily...

Sounds like a fried CIA chip. These are quite easy to get (try eBAY). Tomer
