Shareware? Phooey :-(

Has anyone heard of a guy called Robert Brandner? I'd like to contact
him. Probably Austrian.

He wrote a smallish Editor called PolyEd, which I found on Aminet --
just the sort of thing I've been looking for, quite fast, without too
many surplus bells and whistles.

So I sent off the registration form and fee (in Dm), some time back in
June/July, to his address in Furstenfeld. Nothing happened, and I
sort-of forgot about it. Then last week I remembered, and emailed his
address rbr@prip.tuwien.ac.at (Vienna University?). The mail "couldn't
be delivered".

This is not the sort of thing which encourages honesty among shareware
users -- in fact, I'm bleedin' pissed off. The program isn't exactly
crippled, but is set to self-destruct after ten minutes, so I can only
use it for short jobs, and anyway, dammit, I've *paid*. If I thought
there was any chance of finding the frig I'd have a go at de-frigging it,
but life's too short.

So if anyone knows him, or where he is, I'd be glad to know. Doesn't
seem much point in mailing the Uni itself, since he's prolly left long
since.

He may well have moved on from the Amiga before moving on from
university. The safe option is to always mail before sending money.

A safer option is to use Eurocheques wherever possible.

Yeah, I realise it has been around for a long time, but what I'm cross
about is that, having posted this stuff, he should then walk away without
leaving a forwarding address.

Exactly so :-)

I repeat, it doesn't encourage honesty next time.

Thank you, Brad. What a thoughtful chap :-)

It's not even the money, so much as that I really like the dam' program.
I wonder how he does the ten-minute timer .... nah, can't be bothered.

Who's to say he didn't. It was over four hears ago, who knows how many
occupants that address has had since then.

I know, I know, and it's the first bad experience I've had in quite a lot.
Shan't *really* try to rip others off in the future :-)

I'm to say he didn't :-)
I'm not talking about his email address, but about the fact that he
couldn't be bothered to change the contact address(es) given in his
wossname on Aminet.

His email address is irrelevant, since you didn't use it before sending
the money :(

I was talking about his snail mail address.

If he'd left the Amiga, especially if no more registrations were coming
through to remind him of it, he may well have forgotten all about it.

It doesn't help you, and I can understand you feeling annoyed about it,
but shit happens. It's easy to see with hindsight, but I'd never send
cash to an old address without checking it out first.

Like much of life, it's a learning experience. I hope this one wasn't
too expensive for you.

I didn't even *find* it before sending the money. It was not in an
obvious place.	But you're right, of course.

So was I.

So he may, but what I'm saying is that he dam' well shouldn't have, and
that in doing so he has forfeited any right to "normal" treatment.

<grin> I can afford it. Like I said, the main annoyance is not being
able to get a full version of the wretched program.

Ne' mind, eh? I'll know better in future. Probably.

<G> But Brad, I haven't knoocked in years.

At my advanced age, the opportunity for knoocking doesn't arise.
Nor, except under the most extreme provocation, does anything else :-(
Perhaps it's just as well ....

Hell's teeth, I became a bloody grandfather last week :-(((((

Question: does anyone know whether early 4000 motherboards were larger
than the later ones?
I've just towered my old one, and it doesn't actually fit properly.
Maybe it's just the ATEO kit -- I'm not hugely impressed with its quality.
