Hello all! I have a US Robotics Sportster Vi 28.8 which has voice/fax
and modem facilities. At the moment I use the supplied QuickLink II
software and it's, err...., OK... apart from at least one in three calls
being cut off due to some fault..
I also use my modem with lots of comms. software on my Acorn A440
computer with RiscOS 3.1 and SCSIFs 3. I would like an alternative voice
/fax modem program for dos/windows and a fax and voice program for the
Acorn. If anyone can help, TCITP (the cheque's in the post)..
Or maybe someone would be interested in developing one with me..

I've found QuickLink to be flakey at best - certainly not reliable
enough to be left unattended!

Unfortunately, the voice capabilities of the Vi can't be used on
a standard (Pre-Risc PC) Acorn. Most voice modems will sample at
either 7200Hz or 11000Hz, with 2,3 or 4 bits/sample - 7200Hz@2bits
fits nicely into 19200 "baud" - the fastest standard serial speed.

USR in their wisdom, at least on my 14K4 Vi, have limited sound
sampling to 8000Hz @ 2 bits, which is slightly more than 19200.
Perhaps this is something to do with gaining BABT approval?

It's certainly possible to write your own software if you have a
fast serial port - it's just a case of setting up the modem, and
saving the data stream. I found some helpful documentation about
the Rockwell chipset - I think from www.rockwell.com. The
filename is 288ACCOM.TXT if you want to do an archie search for
it.
