Does the printer obey the rules for a hub or for a normal peripheral device? Unless the Mac sees what it believes to be a hub it will not allow the connection to be switched to ethernet. I don't know the full technical details of how ethernet works, but in effect it is equivalent to expecting to see a carrier signal. A hub always puts out this 'carrier' whereas peripheral devices like computers with switching capabilities look for it before switching. It is for this reason that a crossover cable will not always work - and will usually not work to connect two computers directly together. Small hubs are not very expensive these days and will ensure much more reliable connections appart from allowing more devices than just two to be interconnected.
