Help required for OS u/g

Hello,

I've been asked by a friend to help him get his PPC Powerbook 3400
(16Mb RAM, 1Gb free space on HD, OS 7.6) connected to the net.

In doing this (installing a PCMCIA modem and the Apple internet
connection kit) all went well, except that the system now suffers from
Error 11 failures, forcing the laptop to be rebooted.

In researching this, I find that this is a known problem for this OS
version and it was suggested that an u/g to 7.6.1 was the solution.

I downloaded the five .bin files and script from Apples web site and
after expanding these into a directory using Stuffit Expander, I end
up with five .img files and an .scr file.

When I run the .scr from the directory I created, a box pops up, there
is loads of scrolling text (unreadable due to the speed) and this
stops with an error code which is a different number each time I run
the .scr.

What am I doing wrong? My experience is with dos/Windoze, Novell and
Unix. This is new territory to me and it is pissing me off that I
cannot get on top of this problem.

Any advice would be appreciated, before I teach this laptop to fly!
