Colour printer advice

My past postings to this group have been a bit one-sided, usually asking
advice rather than offering it. So why change a winning formula, is what I
say ...

The company where I work has in the past only had occasional need to print
in colour. It thus uses cheap inkjet printers which are fine for small
volume printing of documents with low print density

We now need to be able to run off larger quantities of colour slides which,
while not including more than a handful of photos, use quite a few colours
and generally have a solid coloured background.

The existing inkjets (eg. Lexmark 4799 plus Colour Jetprinter) are much,
much too slow, and I suspect the coloured backgrounds will result in them
eating cartridges for breakfast. And running off a master copy and then
using a commercial colour copy bureau costs a highly painful 95p per copy.

Anticipated future usage will be to print around 400 pages per day. A
typical day's output would be 8 copies of a 50-page document.

Now, I know you're all itching to advise me to go out and buy a colour
laserprinter, and - believe me - I'd love to. I had a loan unit for a few
days and it was *beautiful*. But it cost five grand. And having only
recently forked out four grand for a 3400c with toys, a further five grand
for a colour projector and going on for yet another three grand for a Demon
Network Dialup Account with ISDN router (which still doesn't work yet
because Demon's Corporate Services Division don't seem to know the first
thing about Macs[1]), the new equipment budget is currently in intensive
care, doctors describing its condition as "critical".

So ...

Is there a cheaper alternative to a colour laser? Or do I have to sell the
receptionist[2]?

Ben

[1] If anyone here can configure our 25-Mac network to talk to a
Demon-supplied-and-configured
Farralon Netopia router, which is plugged into the network and to the
ISDN line and responds
to pings but doesn't do anything else because Demon can't tell us how,
then please let me
know. Demon charge 500 quid for the privilege and still don't seem to
be able to tell us
when they might be able to find a Mac-literate engineer to come and do
the job.

[2] A few previous owners, but still in pretty good condition.
