Sounds like you best reinstall the system software first, but check your
hard disk is not fragmented (use Norton Speed Disk if you have it).

Then zap the PRAM (by holding down the command option & P and R keys all at
once as you startup your Mac).

Then rebuild the desktop. One of these things will do the trick. I doubt it
is your battery, but to find out... go to the date & time control panel and
see if you have 1956 as the year. If you do, the battery needs changing.
