I used to have a PowerBook 180 which I connected to a Sony 15sf using a
VGA adaptor with a little knob for changing resolutions; the resolutions
available that were usable by the PowerBook were either 640x480 or
832x624 (processor cycling is switched on when using the higher
resolution). Because the resolutions are set by the adaptor, one can't
change resolutions on the fly.

The difference between the Sony monitor and the Apple is that the Sony
has a VGA plug and the Apple doesn't. However, the 1710 monitor comes
bundled with a VGA adaptor, and if you added this on to the switchable
VGA adaptor, I see no reason why this wouldn't work, though it's not an
elegant solution.

If you wish to try this solution out, I have both adaptors which are of
no use to me anymore.
