What I originally said, or at least meant was:

The HD icon appears on the desktop if I boot from the HD and I can drag&drop,
create new folders, open existing ones etc. I can even 'click&half' (remember
I have 8.5) and work through the disk folders. What I can't do is see the
disk in open or save dialogs, it just doesn't appear as a possibility, no
matter what I do. Other mounted devices (CD / ZIP) do appear.
If I run DFA or NDD, they say the disk is ok and I've run them about 5 times
now with no reported problems.

If I boot from CD, I can't even see the HD icon.

However, I'm getting sporadic crashes and often a bus error from finder on
boot, which appears to be fixed by a boot with Ext. off and a rebuild of the
desktop, followed by a PRAM zap and then a normal boot. how long this will
last I don't know and I'll completely rebuild this m/c asap - but right now I
NEED it.
