Get today's MacUser magazine for a review of what's available. In
truth, since HP went AWOL (they're semi-back with the advent of the USB
bus), there isn't enough competition in this market nowadays -- so it
is fortuitous that the Epson range is so good and so cheap (no
affiliation).

Top-rated by MacUser is the Epson 740 ("stunning photo-realistic
colour" and pretty good text - albeit not fast). For 140 quid (+VAT), I
think it would be rude, and daft, not to buy one.

If you want more of an office printer then a couple of the other Epson
models are preferred by MacUser for their speed, but greater speed
equals less photorealistic colour. Best text output of all was from the
Epson 1200 which looked head and shoulders above the rest in the output
pictures and every bit as crisp as a laser printer.

The output of the HP and Lexmark models seemed minor league by
comparison.

My own Epson 1520 (almost A2) printer is down to an amazing 315 + VAT
(over 200 less than I paid 18 months ago). It's a bit big for many
home users but for a small studio it's a very cheap way to impress
clients and make money.

It must be said though that the catch with all of these printers is
that they cost quite a bit to run. The Epson models definitely give of
their best when used with Epson brand paper and inks and the company
has decided to make its money on the consumables rather than the
hardware. Fair enough, but be prepared.
