PB G3 Modem trouble with Demon

Hi all,

I've got a PB G3 series with internal KFlex modem.. you know the one.

I have HUGE troubles connecting to Demon at speeds above 33.6kbps. On
the V.90 and KFlex lines Demon offer, I get a good connection speed, but
it dies after a few seconds, or it seems to work for 10 seconds and die
for a minute.

Has anyone has experienced this with Demon? Does anyone have any
knowledge of the modem inside the Powerbook? Can anyone suggest a new
init string, or....something?

Thanks!

Phil

I have a K56flex modem on a beige G3 and while it usually dies after a
few minutes rather than seconds I have the same problem. Despite trying
different init strings and even a change of 'phone provider (not just to
try and cure this problem I hasten to add) I've not been able to sort it
100%. Anything above 38000 the connection dies after a short time and a
redail is the only solution. I've tried boh Green and Purple ROMPs and
other numbers too .... no difference!

Demon state they don't support K56Flex and have tried to help (quite a
pleasant response actually), but in the end referred me to the Modem
manufacturer, who no longer support my modem anyway.

Not a Powerbook problem, but it seems to be the K56Flex more than the
Demon/Mac combination in my experience. I borrowed a V90 modem which had
no problems at all.

I've had similar problems with my Pace 56k and iMac. Seems to be a problem
with my telephone line. Sometimes I got good clean connection with no
dropouts for hours on end, other times (most of the time) I got what you
described.

I finally solved it by setting up the Pace to connect at 33k maximum and
someone kindly sent me a script for the iMac's internal modem to do the
same.

There is currently an official G3 internal modem firmware updater, and a
revised G3 modem extension available for download at the Apple Tech Info
Library on their main US site. Go for the UK version at

These two changes should stabilise your connections.

cheers, Paul.

In my case, it's the phone line that's at fault, but thanks anyway.
