Hi the dip settings for the modem are fine at the moment so just leave
them as they are, but fyi:

Dip1 Up-        Data terminal ready (normal)
     Down-      Dtr override

Dip2 Up-        Verbal result code
     Down-      Numeric result code     

Dip3 Up-        Supress result codes
     Down-      Display result codes

Dip4 Up-        Echo offline commands
     Down-      No echo

Dip5 Up-        Auto answer on ring
     Down-      Supress autoanswer

Dip6 Up-        Carrier detect normal
     Down-      Carrier detect override

Dip7 Up-        Load NVRAM defaults
     Down-      Load factory defaults

Dip8 Up-        Dumb mode
     Down       Smart mode


The only switch's you may ever have to change are 5 for autoanswer or 7
for factory defaults.

As for the error message, not to sure what it means by that, but there
certainly shouldnt be a problem using the modem on a normal BT line.
Check to make sure the modem is a UK specific one, by doing the command
ATI7 to the modem and checking the response.
