From out of nowhere, Keith Stanbury <keith@ilf0rd.demon.co.uk> gave

UMC make many types of chips, motherboards and "own-make" products.
This is just an un-branded UMC modem with a Zoltrix sticker on it, or an
own-make "zoltrix"-designed modem using UMC components and UMC BIOS.
Try a generic V32bis init string (sorry, being as unhelpful as ever, I
don't have one) - but try downloading modem.txt from ftp.demon.co.uk (I
think it may be available from the website as well). This file will
have generic init strings for Rockwell-based, USR-based, Generic and
some other chipset-based modem types, so it may be a good place to
start. You never know, there might be a UMC-based init string in there.

Good luck.
