I am relieved to be able to report that I have discovered & fixed the problem that I was having. I found a setting in my Award 4.5PG BIOS - PCI Burst to Main Memory which by default is enabled. Setting this to disabled ensures that the SCSI card functions properly in DOS & Windows 95. I don't know exactly what this does as it is not documented in the otherwise excellent ASUS manual, However I assume that it is going to slow down the PCI transfers somewhat, in fact my Graphics Winmark95 is down by about 15%. As the whole machine is so much faster though I think that I can live with this. Incidentally I did try setting the motherboard clock speed to 33MHz (I am currently using a Cyrix 5x86 in 3X40MHz) but this made no difference to the problem. The BIOS setting was the answer as it is quite consistent that if re-enabled the problems recur. Thanks to everyone who emailed me with suggestions. -- Nigel Barker nigel@openvms.demon.co.uk
