I was also aware that some arrangements do work singly, but I lack the experience to identify them. >Incidentally how come you have a single SIMM that is spare from this other >mobo that won't fit the case? That machine would also need pairs! My intention is to get this machine up and running for no additional outlay (although I may end up dropping Linux Emporium a few quid to ensure I get an up-to-date distribution). I have a 486DX4/100 mobo that I was given, but it has no case. I have the Blue Lighting that I obtained for free, apart from having to buy its owner a new PC. The IBM case is unusual, like an ATX, but I don't think it is one as the card slots are piggybacked on top of the mainboard. The DX4 also has 8MB of RAM, comprising 4x1MB in 30-pin slots and 1x4MB in a 72-pin slot. I know that this memory configuration works at a reasonable rate on that board as I used it briefly in my main box when I upgraded from a 386DX25 a few years ago. -- Stuart Baldwin
