> >try and go for PC133 > It'll run at 133 in this configuration? OK. Yeah no problem, even if you only run at 100Mhz, the upgrade path is always there. > >> EIDE Drive 1 20G Seagate 7200rpm ATA66 ($194) > >> EIDE Drive 2 DVD 8x Afreey ($139) > >> EIDE Drive 4 Teac CD-ReWriteable 4x4x32 ($199) > > > >thought of SCSI? take some load of the processor for cd-writing > Yeah? How does that work? All excuses for more gadgets very welcome, > you understand. The drives are about the same, I paid 150UKP for a Yamaha 6x SCSI Writer and 100UKP for a Pionner 10x SCSI DVD. Then you want a PCI SCSI card, about 30UKP for a cheap one. Then most of the processing is taken away from the CPU and done by the card. Much more stable for on-the-fly copying. Well worth thinking about. > >> Video Card 32mb ATI Rage Fury 2000 ($109) > > > >or a Nvidia TNTII depending on what you want to do. > Play DVDs, play games, edit photos, even, when all else fails, edit C > programs in vi... I've always rated the ATi cards for business but for games everyone is going for the Nvidia chipsets. Either the M64 or Vanta which is the cheap one 50UKP ish for a 32MB Card, the TNT II approx 130UKP and the Ultra II comes in at 150UKP. You can also get a Ge-Force or something, kinda like the porsche of graphics cards (for this week) at 180UKP. I think the TNTII is the best bet. > >> Modem 56.6k Zoltrix PCI ($24) > >is this a software based modem? Anyway, I'll check out the diamond. The software based cards give a massive overhead to the CPU, the hardware cards are well worth the 35UKP. > >> Network Card 10/100mbit 3Com 3C905 PCI ($65) > > > >i *always* use a netgear fa310tx but if you've got the money why not > Probably don't need the speed. I meant if you've got the money for a 3Com card! The netgears are 10/100 PCI and they're about 15UKP. They're better than the realtek and work like a charm. http://netgear.baynetworks.com/ Andrew PS ASDL - You bugger :)
