In article <8e7luq$rce$1@neptunium.btinternet.com>, Yogi <yogi_turner@btinternet.com> writes >Hello > >A friend of mine's PC failed to bootup this morning, it came up with >operating system not found, he then used a start up disk which came up with >can't find valid FAT or FAT32 partition. It gave him a few options, to run >fdisk, all he did was fdisk/ status which told him he had a 8.4Gb hard drive >(which was correct) but none of it was used??, and that he might have a >virus, but I don't have a virus checker that you can run through DOS, are >there any?? . Yes, because when a virus hits hard you usually can't get to Windows & as the sorts of virus which hit hard effect the master boot record of the hard disk & will cross over to any other master boot records eg startable floppies! Most anti-virus manufacturers will give you some subset of their main program which you can use to remove the virus from your friends hard disk. You need to make a startable disk from a clean machine (use your machine?). Any startable disks that your friend may have made may be infected so don't use them! Follow the manufacturers instuctions for the use of their particular program. Personally, as I use Norton Anti-Virus I would use Norton anti-virus for dos (navscan.exe) which should be available (free) from the Symantec website. www.symantec.com. You'll probably have a search a bit to find it. After he's used it, remember to scan all of the startable floppies he's made or they'll reinfect the machine if used. Put the write protect tabs on them so they can't be reinfected. -- John Chapple
