Voting must be over...

It's a resource kit thing. The manual method (see KB Q156358) is much
preferred to uptomp. The manual method involves installing a primitive
version of NT to a separate folder, booting into that copy of NT (to
avoid share violations), changing the permissions on Hal.dll, Win2k.sys,
Ntoskrnl.exe, etc., on the original %system%\system32 and renaming them.
Then expand whichever SP you're on to a temp directory and copy the MP
versions to %system%\system32 and rename them.
In your case you want the Halmps.dll as Hal.dll. You may need to expand
kernel32.dl_ from a command prompt, depending on whether your SP is on
CD or a download. See the KB article, it's all explained there.

You also need to update the info in Setup.log in case you reinstall a SP
or go to a later SP. The KB article is Q168132.

I'll email you a copy of the posting that I made 18 March which explains
the method that I use.

>I am currently quite happy running SP5, is SP6a a Good Idea[tm]

I'm still on SP5 but that is lack of time. The souls on
comp.os.ms-windows.nt.admin.security seem to think SP6a is a good idea,
as does Richard Clayton, who is perhaps, a reference more familiar to
you.

>Any additional advice welcome.

1. Backup (does your Gran. suck eggs?)

2. Get versions/dates on all the H/W drivers in case it goes tits up

3. Don't use uptomp
Uptomp: 1 success 2 failures
Manual: 4 successes (2 of these when swapping a single to a dual board)

4.You may want to do some research into APIC 1.1/1.4 to get a line on
when to enable the APIC 1.4 setting in BIOS. AIUI, APIC 1.1 assigns IRQs
in the conventional 0-15 manner, APIC 1.4 doesn't do it this way, but is
apparently much better, though I don't fully know why. All the boxes
I've done ended up APIC 1.4 with weird IRQs but they work well, though
none of them had the setting in BIOS that the BP6 has. If you learn
anything useful about 1.4 please let me know.

Any help, just ask. I've got a Rexx script for separating ng postings
that I can't get to work, so we could come to some arrangement :)
