Sorry, I can't help but I can confirm you are not alone.

My brother in law has an old 486 sx25 running w3.1 and his system fails
to boot if his HP DJ320 is connected. 

IIRC the system hangs virtually as soon as it is turned on. Turning the
printer power off at the wall socket seems to prevent this happening.
