Very similar problem, but a twist in the tail.

My mother has a Umax 610P. When she first installed it there was no
problem with printing whether scanner was on or off. After disconnecting
cables and then putting back same as before, it no longer prints unless
the scanner is on. No amount of changing parallel port settings, (EPP,
etc) or checking connections, or even changing the motherboard! has made
any difference. It now has to be on if she wishes to print.

The printer plugs into the scanner (as it did before she unplugged and
replugged it) so I can only speculate that there's a faulty connection
of some sort and one line isn't being passed properly through to the
printer, and so unless the scanner is on the printer isn't receiving
correct power or line signals???
