Cutting & pasting Encarta 99 images into Word 6

Guys 'n' Gals

When doing the above (on a W98 system), the image seems to be pasted
into Word using a much lower colour depth (256, maybe even 16?). This
means the resultant image is pretty damned grim.

I've got around it by <Alt>+Print Screen (Screen capture), pasting into
Paint Shop Pro 5 (where I can crop, resize, etc) and then cutting and
pasting into Word. The image is then OK.

Can anyone explain why I must jump through these hoops or any way of
avoiding having to do so?
