I'm using an AMD k5 133 with W95, although NT4 Workstation is also on
the machine in a different partition, D: (but it put plenty of files
into the boot partition, C:, too). There is 100Mb free on the drive.
It may be something to do with NT, since I know that the MSDOS prompt
worked before I installed it (I was able to play network Doom, for
example).
Now, some time later (which is why I'm not sure if NT is the cause - I
didn't expect any problem so didn't test it right away), when I try and
open the DOS prompt, it crashes, telling me it has performed an illegal
operation and I should restart the computer. The details are:
Fault location: 0028:C02B881F
Faulting component: VMOUSE(03)+00001323
Interrupts in service: None
Interestingly, if I go to Device Manager and remove the mouse and
reboot, usually, it makes no difference, but once only, the DOS prompt
worked fine and a game of network Doom played properly.
I tried changing the driver from Standard Serial Mouse to Microsoft
Serial Mouse, but when I do that, although the mouse works fine, and is
in fact a Microsoft serial mouse, Device Manager claims the mouse is not
working properly. The DOS prompt doesn't like it either (i.e., same
result).
Scandisk/Thorough, Defrag and PC-Check software find no problems with
the drive, although the motherboard's system clock fails PC-Check's
test. But then, it always has failed.
