Firstly, have you set one drive up as 'Master' and one up as 'Slave' - 
by configuring the jumpers on each drive ?

Also, do you know that the two drives are compatible with each other ?

Some drives (a minority) won't get on with another as slave and insist 
on being the master. Also, you'll get the odd total mismatch, where they 
just *will not work at all* with each other :-(

If you have done this, all is not yet lost.

About a year or so ago, I installed a Western Digital Caviar 420MB drive 
to go with my IBM 256MB drive. When I did so, I encountered a similar 
problem. My Bios would not auto-detect the Caviar drive. I had to enter 
the details myself - often you'll find the details listed on the drive 
itself, eg :-

 CYLN    HEAD    WPCOM    SECT    SIZE
 ----    ----    -----    ----    ----
 872      16     65535     36     245MB

If you can find them, try entering them and see if you can get it to 
recognise its existence. Failing that, try another IDE cable - I had a 
duff one of those, too....
