DELL 17" ULTRASCANS 17": A Saga from the quest for a 17" Monitor A month ago, I bought a couple of DELL UltraScan 17" Monitors, or at least . . . . I thought I did. One turned out to be another brand, and the DELL that turned up, well.... The first one didn't work. When switched on, the tube made a "clang" but all that happened was that the contrast and brightness LEDs just flashed quickly. The other controls to the left, under a flap seemed stuck, and LED lighting three of the options. A switch at the rear marked power save, when moved just made the contrast and brightness LEDs flash slowly. The monitors have a manufacture date of 1994. They have a Degauss button next to the power on button, and amongst the settings beneath the flap on the left, there is a reset button (ball point type) select and other buttons). The person who sold it to me, asked me to send it back, which I did, and the one that turned up performed exactly the same way. This week, that one went back, and a replacement was collected from somewhere in London. This time my brother did the exchange, and tried it. He reported exactly the same symptoms! My questions, hopefully to DELL engineers are: 1) WHat is this monitor? 2) Is it microprocessor controlled? 3) What is wrong with them? 4) Do they require special 15 pin cables? Any advice much appreciated.... -- David Longley
