I'd agree with previous posters about sticktion, especially if
the hard drive is a Seagate or IBM 60mb unit.

Remove the case top (2 off Torx 15 screws), and the front bezel
covering the hard drive (2 clips along top surface of bezel).
Examine the right hand side of the chassis containing the drive.
If a black or white plastic pin is present, pull it out.
Pull off the ribbon cable at the back of the drive, be careful
if it is the flimsy copper-evaporated-onto-plastic type.
Lift up the catch under the drive at the front, and slide it out.

Now give it a good shake: don't bang it on any surface, just
waggle it about with a bit of energy. Plug it back into the machine,
reconnect the ribbon cable, and switch on straightaway.

In 99% of cases the machine will boot normally and you can access
your data, but unless you can leave the machine on permanently the
problem will recur and the only solution is replacement.

Running the reference disk will not help, as running a program
off floppy disk is not going to release stuck heads on the hard disk.

Hope this helps,
