Agreed, error 50 is the fuser unit. When you switch on the printer,
look through the ventilation slots at the back to see if you can spot
the bright light from the fuser lamp. If it lights up, the problem is
most likely in the sensor, as Alan Thorburn writes.
In my experience though, the fuser bulb is the most common failure,
and is about ukp25 to buy. Replacing it is not too tricky, but don't
touch the glass envelope of the bulb - it is basically a longer
version of the halogen floodlight bulbs. The envelope is made of quartz,
it is porous, and if you get fingerprints on it, the oil from your skin
burns onto the quartz, causing it to overheat and melt. A hole appears,
and the filament of your ukp25 bulb becomes a ukp25 firework. :)
The reason you have to leave the printer for 10 mins is a reset circuit
in the logic for the fuser, which I think is to prevent the bulb
blowing if the printer is turned on and off rapidly.
Suggest you try Bits N PCs in Isleworth, Middx. for a replacement bulb.
